"Fine Dining in the Woods"

by Jessica (from Toronto)
May 2007 - Boccalino's sounds Italian and definitely serves Italian food. Run by a German hostess and owner, however, the restaurant ends up having a Germanic/ Swiss feel. The owner is consistently gracious and charming as she welcomes locals and repeat guests warmly. An open concept kitchen allows guests to view the pizza oven where Boccalino's makes Italian classics - we had the margherita pizza: a vegetarian option with a simple tomato sauce, basil and mozerella cheese. Their thin-crusted pizza is decent and the ambience is quite interesting during the summer. Boccalino's has a wide covered deck with a larger floor space than their interior space - it allows for the best of inside and outside dining with regular entertainment from local musicians. The outside deck includes a large couch and several chairs to lounge in while guests wait for a meal to go or a table. Boccalino's usually features a selection of gourmet entrees - ranging from roasted hen to a selection of German veals. Its desserts are overpriced and disappointing considering the rest of the dining experience is satisfying - seven dollars after homemade yet freezer-burned ice cream left me regretting my order. It is however, the only nice restaurant on the Eastern side of Kootenay Lake when coming across from the West on the ferry.
