July 2007 - Arriving in Fernie, it seemed very quiet, laid back and relaxed, and it was, but when we drove up to the Mount Fernie Provincial Park camping ground at 5.00pm we found that it was as busy as the two other campgrounds we had asked at in the Fernie area. The park ranger who was at the notice board marking the list of campsites that hangs there permanently said that it was fully booked for the following two days, Saturday and Sunday and there might be a vacant site for that evening! Driving around it soon became apparent that there weren’t any spots. However, the ranger said we could use the day area as an overflow because it was so busy. Two other campers joined is in the day area by the end of the evening.
Driving around the campground, the sites were all spread apart and very private. Each had its own bench site and parking area clearly marked and the design was such that it was unlikely that people would walk through your campsite. The day use and picnic area that doubled as an overflow that night was pretty good. The place we chose was flat and had a table with it was well as being close, but not too close to the flush toilets. The thunder and lightening storm that took place that night was deafening but we miraculously stayed dry in our tent thanks to the well-drained site we had. We were disappointed we couldn’t stay in the campground a second night because it was such good value for money.
