March 2008 - I was interested to see Applewood Hostel as it is on an organic farm that has a shop offering fresh produce and to compare it to other hostels I have visited. It is described as a farm hostel, but it felt more like a building site or work in progress hostel upon our arrival. It was up a dirt track and consisted of a trailer with a lean-too attached. There were all kinds of building materials lying around outside as well as a speedboat and four or five old looking cars. Despite the debris around the place the room we had was clean and presentable and the heating worked well all night to keep us warm. We didn’t make use of the kitchen but it was well equipped and the lounge area was comfortable. I probably would only return to the hostel if looking for a really cheap deal for winter skiing, or wait a good couple of years so the working in progress has made steps to becoming the finished article.
