| "Gorgeous and Awe-Inspiring" |
by Jessica (from Toronto) July 2007 - Yoho National Park has several campgrounds, of which Takakau Falls is my favorite. A three-hundred metre walk-in, the campground has thirty-five campsites, each facing the stunning Takakau Falls across the river. Awe-inspiring is the expression that comes to mind to describe the entirety of Yoho National Park which, for a mere sixteen dollars and change at Takakau Falls campsite gets you: clean outhouses, food storage, and some of the best scenic hiking trails in North America within footsteps of your tent. An extra seven dollars gets you firewood at your campsite - if it is one that is fire-permitting (this might be a factor in choosing a camp site as we were freezing at night in July!) Trailers are not permitted at the campsite as it is a walk-in. While I ws there I saw people hauling things from their car daily for the opportunity to set up camp downwind from Yoho's glacier-fed waters.
From Takakau Falls campground is a spectacular hike to both the Yoho glacier and the Yoho Twin Falls. The glacier is strangely under-visited - this may have something to do with the hazardous nature of approaching the glacier itself. However, one can walk a good distance into the vast valley leading up to the glacier without encountering a soul before approaching any kind of dangerous hiking conditions. Twin Falls is a stunning waterfall that splits into two at the ridge of a mountain that suddenly drops off for the viewing pleasure of hikers willing to take the day trip up there. In the summer, Takakau Falls can be crowded with tourist buses accessing the falls from a parking lot further away from the campgrounds. However, crowds are a small price to pay for an otherwise spacious and glorious national park. Definitely memorable.
