| "Great location, loud trains" |

by Sally (from Fernie, BC) July 2008 - I was looking for a place to camp that was reasonably close in to the downtown of Vancouver but also on the eastern side of the city, so that it was in our direction of travel for leaving the city to head East and home to Fernie. I called the Burnaby Caribou RV Park at 9.35pm to see if they had a space for a tent that night. They did, but the office closed at 10pm so they left a notice for us indicating where to camp and giving us the entry code for the bathrooms and said we could pay in the morning. The girl I spoke to also warned me that the sites were next to the railway line, this is not unusual for campsites in Canada. The sites were very well organized and laid out, each was a sand square outlined with grass and with a picnic table. The bathrooms were clean and well maintained and obviously very secure too. We pitched and settled in to sleep, then we heard and felt this enormous noise and vibration, the train, I’m guessing a freight train. It felt like it was right next to our tent and was going to plough right through it any minute! The solution was earplugs and then I could sleep, despite the fact that trains came past probably every hour or two.
