| "Amazine Shawarma...great little restaurant!" |

by Tiemen (from Victoria, BC) May 2008 - We were in Vancouver for the day to buy a car, and we were looking for a quick bite to eat on the way through downtown on the way out to the ferries. I suggested Red Burrito because I’d enjoyed it so much a couple weeks prior, but the line-ups were huge, so we took a look inside Falafel Maison on the way back to the car. The place smelled terrific, so we decided to eat there. I told my wife to order me a chicken shawarma while I ran back to the car, and the lady nodded approvingly and told me that they were delicious. By the time I got back to the restaurant, our shawarmas were ready. My wife had initially ordered a falafel, but the lady behind the counter had coaxed her into trying the shawarma by giving here a sample which my wife said was absolutely delicious. She was right. The chicken was fantastic…spicy, tender and just greasy enough. The pitas were loaded with chicken…big portions, with hummus, parsley, lettuce and tomato. We were already on our way to being quite full when the lady behind the counter brought us out 4 falafel balls in sauce to try since my wife had wanted falafel in the first place. I was full, but made a special effort to eat the falafel balls, since she’d been so nice in bringing them out. They were really good too…nice flavor and texture. Definitely a fantastic dining experience…and I think we walked out of there spending about $13 with the two Shawarmas and a drink. Great service, great food, and they were playing some Middle eastern, instrumental music that blew my mind. Worth a stop for a quick bite if you’re in downtown Vancouver.
Oh yeah…the hand painted sign on the back of the building says “Falafel House”. Now there’s a Falafel House in every sizable city (probably another in Vancouver already). I wonder if they changed the name to differentiate themselves from another Falafel House…or if they went French in an attempt to establish a more upscale clientele. An honestly strange name…but it adds to the appeal.
