"A Great Little Place"

by Gary (from Calgary)
March 2009 - Montri’s is located on West Broadway. Some free parking is available on the street in front of the restaurant. The room is quite small and when I first arrived it was busy enough that I felt like I was sharing an intimate evening with strangers. Soon, however, the early dinner crowd dissipated and I had my own little corner. Much better! Several wines are available by the glass. ($6.25 to about $8) I chose a Syrah and can’t remember the name. I do remember that it was even more spicy than most and held its own against the curry I ordered. I tried two plates- a sweet and sour chicken and Mus-A-Mun-Pati, which is mixed vegetables, peanuts, and potatoes in coconut sauce. Many dishes are available in five degrees of spiciness. I tried the 3/5 chillies. It was perfect for me. Between bites my tongue had just the right amount of lingering tingle. I was surprised that the sauce was very thin compared to others I have tried, but the taste didn’t disappoint. The sweet and sour dish included pineapple, bell pepper, cucumber and chicken. It was delicious, and the sauce was again quite thin, with no hint of the syrupy sauces one gets in many Chinese Sweet and Sour dishes. The service was excellent, and I enjoyed my meal very much. The two plates, a glass of wine, and an order of rice came to $38. Just a few metres down the street there is a jazz club called The Cellar. I had intended to go, but they had a special event that night. Keep it in mind for a date. Thai food followed by wine and jazz music!
