"not all the hype!"

by K (from Vancouver)
February 2009 - I've been in Vancouver for nearly 25 years & had never been to The Naam. My friends were 'giddy' with excitement to take me last night, and I must admit I was a little stoked myself. However, upon arriving my excitement started to diminish and this was only the beginning.
For the first time I actually stood in line! I have a personal pet peeve & rule... no standing in line to eat and I broke it last night, but only because I was in good company. Oddly enough, I had a hankering for some poutine, but it was not on their menu. Something very close under the appetizers were though, yeahhh. So I ordered their 'Sesame Fries' with cheese & miso gravy. I thought this should be relatively close to poutine although I know it won't be exactly the same. Not only was it not the same... but I was served very bland potato wedges with a layer of mozza cheese & miso gravy on the side. Doesn't sound too bad until you eat it. Not impressed! But since I was starving, I ate it. I also ordered their potato & leek soup, which normally I love... dear lord... I was served a bowl of green soup, doesn't sound bad until you eat it! It was more like 'mint' soup. None of my friends would even eat it. Our server was friendly, however, absent once the food was served, so no one came to ask the traditional, 'how is everything?'. And for my fries & soup & a cup of tea I paid $17!
I hope you have a much more delicious experience than I, but as of last night, I left thinking it's going to be a long time before I come back.

Sorry Naam, you're not the best in my books.

"Vegetarian Paradise!"

by Corbet (from Vancouver, BC)
June 2007 - Vancouver has its fair share of Vegetarian eateries, probably more than anywhere else in Canada. However, there is only one Naam. This Vancouver institution has been serving Van's veggie faithful for over 30 years and there is a reason why they have been able to strive in an increasingly competitive niche. They make vegan food that appeals to non-vegans, such as myself. It also doesn't hurt that they are open 24 hours a day. You just can't beat their grilled cheese and fries with miso gravy at 2 am. For those who prefer to dine during regular hours, the Naam is a great option too. They have a large menu, with their Dragon Bowls being a personal favourite, and I have never had a bad meal there. The service isn't always as attentive as at regular restaurants, but when you at the Naam everything seems to slow down, which isn't a bad thing. The atmosphere is perfect for conversation, with a roaring fireplace in the winter and live music every evening. If you haven't checked it out, do your body a favour and stop by.
