"What a Building!"
8.50
by Mary (from Camrose)
September 2008 - With a name like Romanos Macaroni Grill, one would expect, yes, a predominately Italian food menu, but an eating establishment that was known for fast food and busyness. What a pleasure it was to dine in the 107 year old former home of the sugar millionaire, B.T. Rogers. With its 20 foot ceilings (at least), a grand oak staircase, and stained glass windows, it certainly provided the ambience for fine dining on both floors. We were encouraged by the knowledgeable staff to look around the whole building. The original grounds have been reduced in half, but still is elegant. The building has be used for several purposes after the Rogers family moved out in 1924, with it becoming the present restaurant in 2000. The washrooms were clean and decorated in the same style period. I chose baked halibut on a bed of couscous in a cheese sauce. The halibut was topped with a fairly spicy tomato garlic pesto. This was served with grilled asparagus spears, red pepper, and zucchini. The halibut was rather dry, but it was a flavorful dish. My companions had Chianti New York Steak (which was served with the same vegetables as well as rather oily roast potatoes), and Angelini di Mare. Our young guest said there was lots of crab and shrimp in the tasty spaghetti dish. We shared a light basic cheesecake for dessert which was made decadent by the addition of a chocolate caramel pecan sauce. Delicious. The meals were fairly expensive, but this was a treat we had planned and we were not disappointed.

"Great place"

by Emma (from Port Coquitlam)
February 2008 - I have lived in Vancouver for a few years and have always wanted to try this place, a family member had her birthday dinner here. I was under the impression that the food was burgers etc when I got there we were blown away with the food - it was delicious, different and the service was great.
I would recommend this place any time I get asked a good place to go for food in Vancouver.

"Great Service & Delicious Food!"

by Angee (from Calgary)
July 2007 - This restaurant was simply amazing. Located in a beautiful mansion, the grandeur of the restaurant fits perfectly with its delicious menu, wine list and fine dining atmosphere. Semi-private rooms for large parties ensure other patrons are not disturbed and that each party can enjoy their meal without interruption from another group. For appetizers, my party and I shared bruschetta and stuffed mushrooms, both of which lived up to expectations. The mushrooms were stuffed with cheese, spinach and bread, and were the best I've ever experienced. For dinner, I had the lobster ravioli, which was rich, creamy and really flavorful. My partner tried the Sicilian pizza, which he devoured completely, a feat nearly impossible for such a picky eater. After sampling one bite of it, I can guarantee I will order it the next time I go back! I was also very impressed with the extensive selection of vegetarian fare. The traditional stuffed eggplant dish (eggplant parmesan) was fantastic and is another dish I wish I had ordered to enjoy to myself!

As for the service, it was beyond anything I have experienced in Vancouver. The restaurant had a full house, as well as a number of large parties to attend to; yet, our hostess, server and the staff as a whole was very welcoming and friendly.

One extra benefit I enjoyed was the valet parking, that cost only $6. Very reasonable, considering the busy locale. However, the best part was the large paper table covers, accompanied by a number of crayons to doodle. All of the adults at my table enjoyed this very much, as did other patrons as far as I could tell. Overall, I was very impressed with everything!

"Live Opera at your table"

by Chantelle (from Vancouver, BC)
June 2007 - The setting for Romano's Macaroni Grill is definitely the best reason to eat there. In a converted mansion with a large garden section, it's easily one of the Vancouver West End's most beautiful locations. The waiters throughout the different rooms in the mansion will sporadically break into an opera song and will make you feel as though you're in an authentic Italian bistro. The food, on the other hand, is not so authentic. While the Bruschetta and Chicken Parmesan are adequate and the portion sizes are large, they're about as authentic as what you'd find at any Olive Garden or Earl's restaurant. The service is not the fastest and odds are even that you'll get the wrong order, but all is forgiven when your server busts out the 'Ave Maria'. The wine selection is decent and kids will appreciate being able to draw on the white paper tablecloths so it's definitely family friendly. Also works as a dinner date locale since it's dimly lit and there's lots of intimate little rooms throughout the mansion. Best scenario: go for a glass of wine and a dessert to appreciate the setting, but for a real Italian feast, go somewhere else.
