"Fish the way it should be!"

July 2007 - The original Fish Cafe is a cozy little place on 41st in Kerrisdale; open only for lunch then again for dinner, it literally has one cook, one server and one dishwasher. The new location on 4th in trendy Kits is much larger but has kept the basics of good cooking and friendly service. The menu is selective--written on a chalkboard on the wall--with, surprise, FISH being the order of the day. From whatever fresh fish there is that day to calamari to mussels, don't expect to order a steak here--even surf and turf is out of the question! However, for fish lovers the quality and freshness of product more than makes up for the small selection. You order your fish then chose the way you want it cooked (I recommend the cajun pan-fried--just the right amount of spice and done to perfection) and the sides and sauces you want (the french fries here are incredible and I LOVE the lemon-caper butter which comes on the side for dipping or pouring over your fish as you so chose). My mussel-loving friends have come away satisfied--garlic and cream sauce they have raved over, but I just love the incredible pieces of fish served up in your own little frying pan with a printed liner with fish tips and ideas to read when you are done eating! I have taken many sets of company there when they are in town and have always come away happy and full with great reviews! Most prefer the cuteness of the original location, especially on a cold winter's day with the fireplace blazing and the cook talking over the counter to nearby tables as you watch him work his magic. The hip new location, however, had great service and friendly staff so . . . try them both!
