May 2008 - While walking on the water front in Nanaimo recently, we decided to take a small ferry over to Newcastle Island. It’s only a five minute ride to the Island and quite inexpensive. We met up with a couple of families heading there for a picnic. There are no roads on this Island and it is a Provincial Park, with lots of walking and hiking trails. It’s a very historic Island with lots to see, and the view of the ocean is fantastic from anywhere. The Pavilion that we found was built in the 1930’s as a dancehall which included a teahouse. There is still a teahouse and we were able to order lunch and we sat out on the large wraparound porch. The chef was friendly and helpful to us as the menu is quite varied for such a small eatery. We had delicious homemade hot chocolate and a very tasty burger with fresh cut fries. It was a perfect spot for a perfect lunch.
