| "Read Island Park" |
by Mattie (from Sebastopol) July 2007 - Read Island Park is a lovely area, but the description leaves out an important caution; access to the lake is by an obscure & unmaintained rough trail only. The trail ends (I'm told) in a swampy area. There is no campsite or potable water, just more swamp, thick brush & downed trees.
I just returned from a visit to Read where we tried - unsuccessfully even with the help of a resident - to find the entrance to this trail for a family of overseas campers. They ended up camping elsewhere on the island. I think they were disappointed to find there are no public camping sites on Read with water available. Cell phone coverage is spotty - even if they had one, it's a three mile hike to a spot with good reception. There is no store or marina, these poor folks had to beg water & phone service from island residents. They said they had found out about the Read Island from a book.
Just thought this info might save someone some vacation heartache. The wilderness can be a delightful place, but not if you have no water & no place to go.
