June 2008 - Situated in industrial downtown Kelowna, the Calona Vineyards name is a little misleading as there’s actually no vineyards in sight! The facility certainly does not share the same idyllic scenery as most other wineries in the region, but it’s still worth checking out.
This is one of the older wineries in the Okanagan; the building is of older heritage and the owners like to play up the history of the place with lots of interesting old winery photos on the walls. Unfortunately, no tours were available when we visited.
The tasting staff, not too busy on a Monday afternoon, were friendly and helpful. We were in search of the delicious white ‘Sovereign Opal’ (part of the Artist Series), and we found it reasonably priced. Unfortunately, guests have to pay for tastings but you are sure to find something that you like; also of note was a fantastic Pinot Noir (from their Peller Estates label).
