"Nice Boats, Good Rates"
by Mike (from Calgary, Alberta)
August 2006 - I've rented a houseboat from Three Buoys on two different occasions, most recently in August 2006. Here's my take on the company and the houseboating experience in general.

The Boats: They're not brand new, but quite well maintained. Our boat had a hot tub on the top deck, full kitchen, two bathrooms and four beds (all of which were in reasonable shape). On a couple of occasions we had trouble getting water to come through our kitchen faucets, but the handyman of our group managed to fix it. Be sure to run the boat the recommended numbers of hours per day to ensure the boat’s batteries recharge properly.

The Staff: Quite friendly and accommodating.

Boating Policies: If you want to go to Neilsen Beach (the main party beach) don't rent from Three Buoys. They don't allow their boats to beach here. If you do, you risk loosing your damage deposit and forfeiting your insurance coverage on the boat.

Returning the Boat: We were asked to bring the boat back at 10am on our last day. The lakes are huge, so be sure to beach somewhere within an hour or two of the Three Buoys dock the night before.

The Price: Rates at Three Buoys are quite reasonable when compared to some other companies. I've always avoided long weekends and high season, when rates are the highest.

General Houseboating Tips:

- If you're active, look into renting a small motor boat for skiing, waking boarding etc. that you can tow behind the houseboat.

- Bring or buy firewood (they sell it at the Three Buoys dock and at the floating store in the middle of the lake) so you can get off the boat at night and relax on the beach.

- If you like beer, bring more than you think you'll need. Remember, you don't have to throw it away if you don't drink it all.

- There are a few places where you can go cliff jumping; ask where they are.

- Bring sun block.

- Try sleeping on the beach. On clear nights the view of the stars is absolutely stunning.

- Bring good food. Burgers and smokies only go so far.

- Bring your favourite CDs and DVDs.
