December 2008 - I would love to rant about the lack of ferry service connecting downtown Vancouver and Victoria, but I'm not sure that would be fair on BC Ferries (I don't know who or what is to blame for this). Instead, I'm using this forum to describe my recent experience while travelling with car and family from Tsawwassen to Schwartz Bay, the two way-out-of-the-way ports servicing YVR and YYJ.
I must say that I had a very positive experience travelling with BC Ferries. What I liked most about the service was that they boarded cars up to the very last minute (I was one of those guys racing to the dock, crossing my fingers hoping not to get a speeding ticket). I also enjoyed the openness of the vessel and the services offered. Yes, the food on board is average tasting and very expensive, but I think that comes with the territory. Trains and planes are the same.
If you are looking for a reasonably-priced way to travel to/from the Island, BC Ferries worked fine for me.

July 2008 - On a recent trip from England, we used BC Ferries to travel by car from Tsawwassen to Schwartz Bay and from Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay. On both occasions, our ferry experience was fine - the ferries seemed to be boarded quite efficiently (we had to wait an hour for the trip from Vancouver to Victoria but that was due to our timing, not BC Ferries), left and arrived on time, and offered reasonable facilities. All in all, it was smooth sailing so we had no complaints and would use the ferry service again to get to Vancouver Island.
