| "Identity Crisis" |
|
|
by Brandy (from Dartmouth) February 2008 - Monte Cristo on the River in Courtenay suffers from an identity crisis but not a lack of patrons. The restaurant is indeed located on the river and it is billed as a seafood restaurant. Yet, one look at the menu reveals a very Greek orientation. Apparently, the owner is Greek but the chef is not. About half the menu is dedicated to Greek-inspired foods. The other half is a mix of sea foods and other. My dining partner and I choose to refrain from any Greek dishes and instead selected the Wasabi salmon and the heavily creamed scallops as mains. Both were good but not great. The vegetables were not crisp and the sauces seemed hollow. The waitress answered all of my questions but actually questioned a drink selection I had made. The restaurant was full on a weekday evening. The décor is meant for an older, more traditional crowd. A main and an alcoholic drink cost about $30 after tax before tip. Reservations are recommended but there are better places for seafood in the Comox/Courtenay area. As for the Greek food, I didn’t try it but the waitress claimed it is fantastic.
