by Brandy (from Dartmouth) February 2008 - The Zizi Café is a long way from its Eastern Mediterranean roots. It is definitely a hole in the wall, set on a main street in downtown Courtenay set amongst other small shops. The first thing one experiences upon entering the restaurant is a strange, off-putting smell that is probably cleaning solution. There are many small tables and some stools at a raised table overlooking the street. The menu is uncomplicated and offers an assortment of shawarma, pitas, and dips such as hummus. I ordered the chicken shawarma and an item I had never heard of before as an appetizer. I can’t remember the name of it because it never arrived! I never mentioned it to the owner/operator since she seemed busy even though there was only one other couple in the restaurant during an early lunch. The shawarma, which did arrive, was stuffed to the brim with chicken and tasty herbs and spices. It was good but otherwise unremarkable. My dining partner had one of the pitas and seemed to enjoy it. The shawarma was a bit expensive at over $8 after tax. I will not go back to Zizi nor would I recommend it to anyone unless they have a craving for Eastern Mediterranean food while walking through downtown Courtenay.
