| "No-frills food & atmosphere" |
|
|
by Joy (from Calgary) July 2008 - This Rock Cod Cafe overlooks the waterfront (as is the case with most restaurants and shops in Cow Bay) and enjoys a nice location next to the maritime centre (which is actually a picturesque pier) but its appeal somewhat ends there. The place seemed pretty popular with locals and had friendly staff but the ambience and food were not overly inspiring. If you have time, it would pay to look around as there seem to be quite a few quaint little cafes which probably offer more atmosphere but if you want a family-friendly, no-frills environment, this restaurant is a good bet.

| "Average seaside food" |

by Sally (from Fernie, BC) July 2008 - I confess I am a little bit disappointed with our choice of eatery in this town but you can’t get it right all of the time. If I had had my choice I would probably have turned around on looking inside and gone elsewhere. Part of my disappointment comes from the fact that Cowichan Bay is a nice little seaside village with a maritime museum and lots of cafes, so a good dining experience would have been in order. Anyway, Rock Cod Café had air conditioning but also had plastic table clothes with the tables all very regimented in layout and very plain white and blue décor, strip lighting, which I never like, completed the ambiance of the place. I ordered the Caesar salad with garlic bread and my partner had crab cakes with onion rings. The crab cakes had very little crab and a whole lot of bread, which meant they were filling but not tasty. Generally the food was okay but nothing fancy. It was reasonably priced to be fair and the staff were perfectly friendly.

Hi Sally,
I'm really glad you added your last comment. Definitely made the review more fair. We are all about reasonable prices and large portions to ensure that most people feel that they've gotten value for their money. If I offered crab cakes that were entirely crab, you wouldn't be able to get them for $6.95 and if you wanted good tables with no vinyl tablecloths and a generally higher end decor, you wouldn't be able to get 2 huge pieces of cod and chips for $10.95.
We don't stand a chance against discriminating palettes and foody types because of the sheer volume and low price point (chosen, of course!) of our business. You cannot have incredible presentation and offer expensive dishes when you put entrees out in under 12 minutes.
And by the way, we are not fast food, we are good food cooked quickly. :-)
Thank you for your review and the opportunity to respond.
Regards,
Jacob Hokanson
