"A Lack of Substance"

February 2008 - The Fluid Bar & Grill is an attempt to bring a trendy dining experience to the Comox/Courtenay region. Modeled much like an Earl’s or Moxie’s, Fluid has a stylish interior with black booths, and nice looking menus. The food, as presented in the menus also looks like it tastes very good. Unfortunately, the food does not taste as good as it sounds. I ordered the Mango Chicken Penne. The same dish at Moxie’s is probably one of my favorite dishes. The one I had at Fluid was very, very bland. There even appeared to be fresh mango in the dish but everything, even the sauce seemed flat. My dining partner chose another unremarkable dish. The bar, however, did have a reasonable selection of wine, local and otherwise.
Fortunately, the restaurant did redeem itself with dessert. My dining partner chose a fruit crumble of some sort and they were relatively pleased. I chose the white chocolate brule. It appeared very striking as it was serve in a long and narrow curvy dish. It was not the best brule I had ever had but it was very good and there was a lot of it! Surprisingly, the brule was only $7. Service was good. An odd thing about the restaurant was the televisions on the ceilings displaying the hockey game. The televisions did not seem to match the chic atmosphere they were going for. I recommend Moxie’s, for the food and atmosphere, over Fluid.

Management Response:

Thank you so much for your comments. As a 2-year old Idependant restaurant in the Comox Valley we value all comments both postive and negative from customers. Without them we would be hard pressed to improve and be better tomorrow than we are today. I respect everyone's opinion and look forward to exceeding their expectations the next visit. In response to these comments; We designed Fluid bar and Grill to cater to all crowds. The Comox valley is too small demographically to cater to a small target market witha restaurant with 110 seats inside and another 90 seats on the patio. You can come by to watch the game on the big screens, you can sit by the fireplace in leather lounge chairs and reminisce about the day on the slopes, visit for a fast business lunch and take advantage of our FREE wireless Internet, or bring out the family for a fun dinner or special occasion. As for our menus we are pleased to announce that we have a new Executive Chef as part of our team. Chef Adrian merrilees is an award winning Chef native of New Zealand who joined just prior to the New Year. Come experience some of his great new creations on our Fresh sheets. Our goal is to provide good quality food using fresh ingredients "including Mango's", and provide it for great prices. All of our desserts are made from scratch in house which is why they taste SO GOOD! For that matter I'm hard pressed to identify an item that is not made in-house. Being a five year veteran of a corporate restaurant chain similar to Moxie's and earls I know from experience that they do not meet that standard. I'm dissapointed for this particular customer because I love our Mango Curry Penne, I order it often and recommend it often. I will order it tonight just to make sure it still meets our expectations. Thanks again for your comments and we look forward to more of them. Make sure to introduce yourself in the restaurant the next time your in as were always looking for new friends. Cheers, Brandon
