June 2008 - While driving in the countryside south of Nanaimo in an area called Cedar, we came across a wonderful pub called The Crow and Gate. It seemed to be in the middle of nowhere but there were at least a dozen cars in the parking lot. There's a lovely pond with black swans in it.This is a British type pub and when you walk through the door, you could be anywhere in Britain. The very friendly hostess met us and welcomed us and explained that the menu was on the chalk board and we were to order at the bar and they would deliver it to us. We chose to sit indoors even though they have a fairly large outdoor patio. There were 10 choices for meals and my dining partner chose the Bratwurst and salad plate. He was so pleased with his meal, he said the salads were fresh and light and delicious. He loved the two perfectly done bratwurst. I ordered the Boston Clam Chowder and the fresh out of the oven roll. The chowder was chuck full of clams and vegetables and was so delicious. Even after all that, we ordered their trifle for dessert, that’s one of the locals favourites. We certainly agree. We will be back.
