"Delicious Tartar Sauce!"

by Tara (from Victoria)
February 2008 - On a recent trip to Nanaimo my husband and I passed by Pirate Chips while shopping downtown. It looked like a great little fish and chip place and was advertising a really good deal for fish and chips. Under $6 for a one piece meal. My husband ordered 2 pieces so his was a bit more, but still a great price for all the food we got. My piece of fish was huge and there were plenty of fries too. The fish was tasty but a bit too greasy with a little too much batter. The fries were good and definitely home-made. I could see the person who was working there slicing them. My favourite thing of all was the tartar sauce though. It was the best tartar sauce I’ve ever tasted! It was sweet, tangy and had just the right amount of dill in it. I would go back just for the tartar sauce! The girl serving us was very cheerful and friendly and it was a great atmosphere with all sorts of pirate stuff hanging on the walls. It’s a small place and there wasn’t much room to sit, only a few seats in front of the window. I didn’t see a bathroom either. But overall my experience was good and I would definitely recommend it.

"Cheapest Fish and Chips around."

February 2008 - Ok...I love fish and chips. I was absolutely thrilled about the number of choices of Fish and Chip shacks I'd have after moving to Vancouver Island. My only complaint is that fish and chips are so expensive. I mean, the average price of a couple pieces and chips in Victoria, hovers around $11. I've been saying for months that somone should offer fish and chips in the $5 to $8 range, but had yet to come across anyone who did. Well, of course, I came across a place when we were up island in Nanaimo last weekend. We were looking for a place to grab a bit of lunch, when I saw a sign proclaiming $5.50 fish and chips. Now, this was a place after my own heart. We went into the little Pirate themed fish shack called (what else?) Pirate Chips, and took a look at the menu. Of course the $5.50 special referred to a one piece of your generic fish (can't actually remember the type) with fries. You could double the fish and bring the price up to $8.75, so I went with that, while my wife got the special, straight up. The fish and chips were made fresh as we ordered. Everything came hot and fast, but you get what you pay for with the fish. The lower end fish had very little flavor...a little disspaointing, but the batter was good, and the tartar sauce and fresh cut fries were fantastic. I guess I finally found my bargain fish. I just wish I'd upgraded to the sole for an extra couple of bucks.

If you find yourself in Nanaimo and you're on the lookout for something to eat, stop by Pirate Chips. You can't go wrong with the special...if you order extra tartar sauce. I suggest not cheaping out on the fish though. They also deep fry chocolate bars and all sorts of other crap for desert (they discount the price if you bring your own bar!). Try to avoid peak hours though. There are only 7 seats, and I'm guessing it's a pretty popular joint!
