"The Waddling Dog is no Dog!"

June 2008 - This attractive little inn is located just outside Sydney in Saanichton B.C., a Quality Inn in disguise. The exterior has an English Tudor feel, reminiscent of an old English pub. The pub is named after a dog named “John II”, aka waddling dog. The pub encourages everyone to “come, sit, and stay.”

For years I have passed this landmark on the way from the airport to Victoria, and finally I had a companion who was just as intrigued by the name. We sat on the bar and grill patio looking out onto the highway and up into the hills, literally wallowing in the sun as we drank a pint of beer and downed battered oyster and chips. Inside the pub smacked of Harley paraphernalia, complete with a raffle to win a Harley bike. Several of the patrons wore the obligatory biker gear, and everyone was very friendly.

Our server was excellent – she had been at the Dog for a long time and was a seasoned professional. The menu was filled with standard pub fare, with its share of seafood and fish, pastas, burgers (including Turkey, Buffalo and Salmon), and various chicken dishes. Prices are reasonable; $5 and up for appetizers, including crab stuffed potatoes; $7 and up for lunch fare, and around $14 for a supper meal. Not a lot for the vegetarian except for a couple of salads and an interesting main dish called roasted garlic and mushrooms. Another table with an English couple tried it and said it was good. Overall, I can honestly say the experience was well worth the stop.

"Good pub food!"

November 2007 - After a long flight from Calgary, my wife and I wanted to stop for a quick bite to eat before exploring Victoria. This pub is in the Quality Inn Waddling Dog which is conveniently located right beside the highway. This establishment boasts the typical old English pub style decor yet adds a North American sporty flavour with many tv's airing different sporting events. It was midday and the pub was fairly full with patrons young and old. Our server was pleasant and attentive.

I ordered the Ale Battered Halibut and Chips which was very satisfying. My wife ordered the Chargrilled Flat Iron Steak Sandwich and salad. She raved that the steak was very tasty and cooked exactly as ordered.

My grandparents used to frequent this hotel and restaurant 30 years ago and we were glad to have stopped to check it out. We will definitely return - not because of the standard pub ambiance but because the food was very good.
