June 2008 - Wow, this place was hopping! I walked up and down the main street, surveying the dozen or so coffee shops, restaurants, diners, cafes, and of course, Starbucks. Although there was a smattering of people in most of them, the place was literally stuffed with patrons. A din of chatter and laughter greeted me when I opened the door, too much for me at 8:00 am, so I chose one of the three sidewalk tables. The place had a very cozy, albeit squishy feel, and the owner (at least I think he was the owner) talked and joked with everyone. He barely had to move to hit mugs with more coffee and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.
It felt like I had discovered the local diner. The coffee was fantastic – I chose a dark roast over the medium, and I think it was the best coffee of my trip, and less than $2 for all I could drink. The menu had a nice variety of foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, all pretty straightforward, priced up to around $13. My cheese omelette was very nicely done although a little something in there, an herb or two, would have livened it up a bit. The hashbrowns were not greasy at all and the lot came in for less than $6. I listened in to the man beside me with his “little princess” of 2 who had the buttermilk pancakes – she gushed for quite a long time over her food like they were the best cakes her little 2-year-old mind and taste buds had experienced, and he seemed to be deeply involved with his eggs and toast.
Besides almost getting whalloped by a ball when her daddy thought he would demonstrate to princess what a perfect drop shot looked like, my breakfast was a success. I would highly recommend this fun little diner to anyone looking for good food in Sidney.
