"(Not so tough to take) Tough City"

by Willem (from Toronto)
July 2008 - Just got back from a week's trip to Vancouver Island and our visit to Tough City was definitely a highlight.
Unique ambiance, great hosts in Ron and Johanna, and the freshest sushi I've ever eaten. All at a most reasonable price (things aren't cheap to begin with in this part of the Island).
Thoroughly enjoyed it - a word of caution - it is very busy and they don't take reservations. But it's worth the wait - so go sit outside (by the entrance door) and you'll be taken care of in due time.

"this place has character"

March 2008 - Now here is a place with really great sushi and an environment with a whole lot of character. The building is full of interesting things to look at, including model airplanes all over the place. A character himself greeted us as we arrived on the patio outside the restaurant and brought us to our seats indoors, talking and laughing most of the way. He was clearly interested in people, as he asked each of us where we were all from and with our replies would share stories of his adventures in that part of the world.
We ordered a variety of sushi dishes to share amongst the 5 of us. Everything tasted so good that even my mom, who wasn't sure she would like sushi, concluded: "I like sushi now!" It was reasonably priced and well worth the drive from Uclulet. Because we were there in the evening we couldn't see out the large windows all around us. I imagine that in the daytime, it must be nice to enjoy sushi while looking out at the Ocean.

"Fun Atmosphere, Great Sushi"

by Jason (from Calgary)
August 2007 - During a visit to Tofino we decided to look for a sushi restaurant for dinner. We found Touch City Sushi in the local information handouts and decided to try it out. This little restaurant is tucked in a corner but overlooks Tofino's harbour. The inside of this restaurant was really different. There were toy planes hanging from the ceiling all over the restaurant. Very large planes and small planes. The decorating in this place was really different and interesting. Although the service wasn't that quick, the staff was very attentive and we even had a good chat about some local must-dos with our waiter. We ordered a variety of sushi, most with names we hadn't heard before but sounded good. We also went with some recommendations from our waiter. The sushi was so fresh and the servings were very large. Everything we ordered was very good. The prices seemed high until we saw how large the servings were. My wife also ordered some tempura vegetables that she raved about. I passed on the veggies as I was way too full. The restaurant was clean and cozy. While eating dinner we were also able to watch planes landing and taking off in the harbour. We would definitely eat here again.

"Great Food Lively Surroundings"

July 2007 - Tough City Sushi is located on the waterfront in Tofino and offers a fabulous view of Tofino's busy harbour. You can sit on an outside deck or eat inside, but either way you will experience the atmosphere as much as enjoy the food. This is a very popular spot for locals which is an indication that the food is good. The walls are covered in "artifacts", items the owner has picked up here and there in his travels which provides some entertainment while waiting for your food. The menu offers a wide variety of choices and prices are reasonable. For those who like variety, Tough City offers combination plates of sushi. We tried a combo platter with avocada, spicy tuna and california rolls and another plate called the "smiling buddha" - deep fried sushi rolls topped with strawberries and roe. That was a hit with the kids - no raw fish! Service wasn't fast, but certainly friendly, and given that both times we were there the place was packed, we knew to be patient. This is casual dining so don't expect the chairs to match. This restaurant caters to a mix of clientele from locals, surfers and visitors from all over the world. We enjoyed both the food and the prices and will include Tough City Sushi in our travel plans from now on when in Tofino.
