September 2009 - If you are wondering whether or not this is the place for you, consider this a sign. I am not sure how they got any positive reviews. My wife and I couldnt get out of this place fast enough. This hostel is filty, rooms are small and there is no respect or privacy from the staff. It has the general feeling of your creepy uncles basement. This place defies everything that hostels are supposed to be. Not recommended for adults or anyone for that matter. Keep looking, Victoria is a great city and otherwise very accomodating for travelers.

"Great Vibe"

September 2009 - This is definately one of the best hostels I've stayed in while travelling across Canada, with live shows regularly from groov'n bands as well as a varitable cornacopia of oddball backpackers from all over the world it makes for a great time, not to mention a lounge complete with disco ball and scrumptious food!

"Best Hostel EVER"

July 2009 - I have stayed at the Ocean Island Hostel for coming up 4 months and will be very sad to leave. This, out of all the hostels I have stayed at throughout my travels, would definately be the best.
Firstly, the staff are helpful and made me feel welcome from day one. Any questions or concerns, they were always there to lend an ear. Even to chat to at 3am coming home from the pubs.
The location is awesome. Right in downtown, walking distance from all the night life, pubs and clubs, and day activities. There is even a fully licenced pub right downstairs in their cafe...not may hostles have their own licenced pub and cafe.
Also, the fact that you get your own privacy in the washrooms is awesome. The other hostels that I have stayed at not only have small crappy dorms, but you have to share a washroom with like 10 other people. Here there is a lock seperating you from everyone else.
The dorms are cozy and quite comfortable. I stayed in a 6 bedroom dorm for the majority of my stay. There was plenty of space for all my stuff and everyone elses too.
The people here are amazing. I have met so many people from all over the world; shared some laughs, told storys and even went clubbing with them. Pretty much the best group of people I have ever met.

Thank you Ocean Island for EVERYTHING.

I WILL BE BACK...

"Great time!"

June 2008 - All I wanted to do when I hit the West coast was to just chill and enjoy the natural beauty of Vancouver Island.
I arrived at Victoria not wanting to be just a tourist, but to jump headfirst into a great time.
On a whim I decide to check into a hostel. Right smack dab downtown I see the Ocean Island Backpackers Inn. The lady behind the front desk gives me quick courteous service. I get a room for a decent rate...it's nice cosy and clean- so far so good.
I venture downstairs and soon mix with a delightful clash of nationalites, characters, and cool cats. The lounge is simply bumping, all kinds of live music and good cheap food.
The location of the hostel allows for a short stroll to any of the cool bars they have in town or even a quiet walk along the water.
I meet so many cool people that I plan on making Ocean Island a a priority pitstop the next time i hit the west coast again.

"Still crazy after all these years!"

June 2007 - Some things I've learned from staying at OI: their site is really good for picking a room because they have so many different ones. I stayed in the smaller cheaper ones and if you want some "privacy" it's the best. Be warned, the kitchen gets real busy during dinnertime so it's good to do your cooking before or after.

"Just what I needed"

June 2007 - This was my first trip alone in years and it was great to find a place I could be independent and take care of all the necessities without spending a lot of money.Ocean Island was perfect becaues of their full kitchen, plenty of nice bathrooms and laundry room right in the building. I also didn't have any hassles, and usually a hostel will be complicated in some way. Ocean Island was so simple, I could ofcus on having a great time in Victoria, which wasn't hard at all!

November 2006 - Hey people this is a cool place to be. If you want to meet open minded people from around the world then this is the place to be. It's a very friendlly atmosphere and you can just sit down and chat with the person sitting next to you when your having a beer. The bar has live music and open mic nights which are always good. It's close to all the amenities and activities downtown. I came here to stay for one night and I have stayed a total of nine months, four last year and five this year and counting. It feels like home and I have made more friends in the last nine months then I have made in my entire life. You can travel the world in one place here. I have learned many things about other cultures here. I wouldn't have changed anything about my stay. The bar is really cool and I have never seen a fight in it. Like all the other bars I have been too. A couple of arguements but mostly good times and really cool people.

August 2006 - A great experince for travellers, A very enjoyable stay where the people are great. The Backpackers inn has a very friendly enviorment with lots of things to do and lots of great people to meet. The staff are some of the greatest people I have met who are very friendly and helpful if you ever need them. It is a place I know I will visit again and I would suggest for anyone comming to victoria to check it out , the price is right and the experience cant be beat.
