| "Mixed Reviews on the Bedford Regency" |

by mary (from Calgary, Ab) June 2008 - We should have known when we saw the huge sign glued to the front window indicating the Jellyfish Lounge, part of the Bedford, had its liquor license suspended. I decided to dismiss this as I was really looking forward to staying at this boutique hotel situated right in the middle of Victoria’s Inner Harbour on Government Street. Boasting fluffy duvets, fluffy pillows, flowerpots in every windowsill, and convenience to everything, this seemed to me to be the best place to plunk down to enjoy the Jazzfest weekend.
The Regency is only a couple of blocks from the historic Chinatown, the Centennial Square where the free music festival was held, and a skip away from the beginning of the walk around the Inner Harbour – wonderful.
Our room itself was interesting, with 2 queen beds that looked a little like someone’s first kick at building something – a box with 4 legs and a mattress dropped down on top of it…a bit strange for a boutique hotel boasting extraordinary architecture and a quaint feel. However, we got the room for discount at $105 so we decided to ignore this faux pas. The room had a historic feel to it, complete with interesting shades of peach, sky blue and a deeper red, nice detailing in the mouldings, and lovely old taps. Everything was clean. Unfortunately, there was no place to put away clothes other than a small area to hang a few things, leaving our suitcases and the chairs to be the keeper of the clothes.
But, here’s the kicker…we had to remake our respective beds several times each night because the bedding continually became unglued! In my companion’s case, it turned out she didn’t have any type of under sheet to anchor her mattress pad (which she figured out the next morning), and so she slipped and slithered every time she tried to turn over. By the third pass she was madder than a wet hen. I was a bit luckier…I had secure bedding most of the time, but the dip in the mattress was very uncomfortable and I ended up with backaches each morning. Never in either of our experiences with hotels have we had to make our own beds over and over.
I will say the staff was great. Every time we brought up a problem, they tried their best to rectify it – it was like chasing their tail as far as I was concerned. They brought up a mattress pad cover thingy, remedying the problem with the bed (sort of – it was still oddly slippery); another day someone forgot to clean our room and so they appeased us with piles of towels, extra coffee for our coffee maker, a mountain of creamers – really, they tried. But, the saddest part of this experience was the incessant boom boom boom from the Jellyfish Lounge that went until 4 a.m. If you ever dare to stay at the Regency, be absolutely sure to ask for a room as far away from the pub as you possibly can – it ruined our last night there.
Overall, the Bedford was a mixed experience for me, although the character of the place and the helpful staff were definitely bonuses, and of course, location, location, location…if you dare, get the room farthest from the pub and check your bed to make sure you’ve got all the stuff needed to get a good night’s sleep.
