"Unassuming cafe spinning out Victoria's tastiest noodles"
8.50
by Diana (from Victoria)
December 2009 - If you're looking for a romantic place to eat dinner, don't come here. Not that it's ugly, but the decor is pretty unassuming. If you're looking for fresh, made-by-hand noodles and wontons, served in some of the tastiest broth I have ever had - make sure you eat here!
You can't live in Victoria long without hearing about J&J, and it lives up to it's reputation. With a glass window into the kitchen where you can see chefs pulling out the fresh noodles by hand, it's hard to doubt the authenticity and freshness of their food. One taste, and you'll be hooked.
After agonizing a while over the many selections, I ordered the Braised Beef Noodle Soup, while my companion had the House Noodle Soup. They arrived quickly, and were steaming-hot. My soup featured a nest of fresh egg noodles topped with braised greens and cubes of tender braised beef, all ladled into a beautifully-balanced broth. Every element was perfectly cooked, and they came together deliciously. My partner's soup had a little of everything in it, with bits of pork and prawn as well as a variety of veggies, all in the same tasty broth. We clamored over whose was better, deciding that it would be hard to try something else after starting with two excellent selections. It seems certain that they are representative of the entire menu. At only $8.50 a bowl, I can afford to find out.

"The Best Chinese Food in Victoria!"
4.83
by Sara (from Victoria, BC)
January 2009 - A friend was going on about how JJ's is the best place to eat Chinese food and one night when another restaurant was too busy, we decided to check it out together. First impressions from the outside aren't very impressive. It looks small and a bit run down but the line was out the door. We waited our turn and found the staff to be friendly. The restaurant turned out to be a good size with plenty of seats. We looked at the menu decided on cashew chicken, sweet and sour pork, house chowmein and one spring roll. We waited 15 minutes then flagged down a waitress and asked if we could order. She told us we're supposed to raise our hands when we're ready to order. I thought this was odd and it would have been helpful if they had a sign at the door mentioning this strange tradition.
When the food arrived (one dish at a time), it was terrific! The cashew chicken was my favorite, and the sweet and sour pork was good as well. The house chowmein was a bit greasy and came with chicken, pork, beef, snap peas, broccoli, and the noodles. The portions were large for every dish and for 2 people, 2 dishes would be plenty. The roll consisted of what tasted like peach but had the texture of orange, a white cream and a shrimp. For someone who isn't a fan of Chinese food, I was pleasantly surprised and would eat there again.

"Great Value"

by Tomas (from Victoria, BC)
April 2008 - This place is all about value, not high quality food or ambiance. I've been here several times for lunch, and always leave satisfied knowing I've enjoyed decent sit-down lunch with hot tea for under $10. Service is always great too.
