"I want my Fried Chicken!"
5.80
by Tiemen (from Victoria, BC)
April 2008 - Ever since we moved from Calgary, I’ve been looking for a place to get decent take-out, fried Chicken. In Calgary, there is a local fried Chicken Shack called Chicken On The Way that I frequented. My wife and I could order the Hungry Man dinner (5 pieces of Chicken, tons of fresh cut fries, two corn fritters and gravy for $8.50), both eat our fill, and still have a small lunch for one of us for the next day. It seems that Victoria has no equivalent. So, Friday night rolls around, and I am craving fried Chicken. We’ve got to roll around town looking for somewhere that I can get my fix. Now, Victoria has no shortage of Fish and Chip places, and a few of the larger ones also offer Fried Chicken (the deep fryers are already hot…chicken, fish, it’s all fries up the same!). We found the first one that advertised fried chicken, and headed in to place our order. We ended up at Salty’s Fish and Chips, a chain restaurant that does take-out and dine-in business. The place was packed with people, so we took that as a good sign, and got down to the business of ordering. The first thing that caught my eye was the prices. I have always thought fish and chips were overpriced in Victoria, and it seems that Fried Chicken is too. At around $8 for a two piece meal, and more for three piece, I quickly found out just how good we had it in Calgary. The bill came to about $20, and I complained about it under my breath, during the short wait for our order. We hopped in the car, and headed home to enjoy our meal. Now, as far as Fried Chicken goes, Salty’s wasn’t bad. It was fresh and not too greasy, but nothing special…especially at double the price we’re used to paying for the same amount of food. It’s hard to screw up fried chicken and fries. My only complaint was that the batter on the chicken was a little flavorless and the fries were your run of the mill take-out variety. Would I go back? Depends on whether I can find a decent Fried Chicken shack with better prices (Help!), before I get my next fried chicken craving. I might have to get someone to express post me some chicken from Calgary!
