| "Disappointing Dim Sum" |
by Diana (from Victoria) November 2009 - A big fan of their Delivery menu, I headed to Jade Fountain first when I had a Dim Sum craving. Having never eaten onsite before, I was surprised to find their facility located in the lower level of the Red Lion Hotel. The room was full of large Chinese furnishings and decor, most of the tables large round affairs with the lazy susan server in the middle. Our party of 3 took one of the smaller seats. I don't know if it was because we came at the tail-end of their Dim Sum service, but our experience was less than impressive. Our tablecloth clearly hadn't been changed between seatings, and the floor was littered with food and debris. Despite many staff members bustling back and forth, it took a long time before we were even acknowledged and even longer before we were served. My partner ordered a beer, which seemed to cause a lot of confusion with the wait staff who had to consult several other people before a bottle was procured. Once the dishes started arriving, they arrived in overly quick succession, and we all felt rather pushed to choose quickly rather than enjoying the Dim Sum experience. We also found the dishes, although tasty, to be cold and stale. The bill came to only $15 a piece, but the experience overall was a disappointment.

| "Great takeout and beer!" |

by Diana (from Victoria) May 2009 - It was one of those nights: we were tired, hungry and had a hankering for a cold one, but neither of us had the energy to go out. I had recently seen an ad for Jade Fountain Chinese Restaurant that said customers who ordered $15 or more in take-out here could order items from the adjacent Lions Liquor Store at no extra cost. We decided to give them a try. The menu, which is available online, offers many tempting choices, including a salt & pepper squid I had heard raves about. We decided to order the Szechuan Dinner for 2 and a 15-pack of Lucky. The friendly order clerk told me it would take an hour, although everything arrived in about 45 minutes. Our food was fresh and hot, and delicious. The combo came with Ginger Fried Beef, Kung Po Chicken and your choice of Spicy Chicken Fried Rice or Chow Mein (we chose the latter). I am not normally a fan of Ginger Beef, which I find too sweet ordinarily, but this version was a perfect balance of spicy and sweet. The kung po was loaded with crisp veggies and big hunks of chicken breast, and the chow mein was perfect. Everything was just the right heat - enough to feel a burn, but not so much as to numb our taste buds. And the cold beer washed it all down just right. This isn't the only liquor store offering delivery in Victoria, but it's the only one that will do it for free. Add it to some of the best Chinese we have ever eaten, and it's a happy take-out experience! The food came to $20.95 and included 2 free pops, and it was $25.95 extra for the beer. We will definately order again.

| "Great Place for Dim Sum" |

by Sherry (from Victoria) April 2009 - If you go to Jade Fountain Restaurant for "dim sum" on the weekends, you'll find it packed with families. Located on the lower floor of the Red Lion Inn, Jade Fountain has good food, especially "dim sum", small appetizer dishes served in bamboo steamers. The wait staff serve the dishes on carts pushed from one table to the next. It helps to know some of the best dishes to try, but the staff are quite friendly and willing to describe as much as they can what it is you're ordering. It's good to be adventurous, we've come across some really delicious appetizers by trying new things. I'd recommend the shrimp dumplings and the bbq pork buns are quite nice as well. You also have the option of ordering from the menu as well. We enjoyed the Singapore noodles and the fried rice. Reasonable prices and good prices, I'd recommend Jade Fountain. Weekend dim sum can be quite busy, be prepared to wait for a table unless you show up right at opening at 10:30 am.
