"Tasty, fast Indian food at great prices"

by Tiemen (from Victoria, BC)
October 2007 - We came across Sabri last week while getting ice cream at a retro parlor located in the same strip mall, and vowed to check out the buffet as soon as we had the chance. Well, less than a week later, it was Friday night. Nobody felt like cooking, so off to Sabri we went.

The restaurant is located in a strip mall across from Tillicum mall. It’s a bit of a drive from downtown, and it’s in an aging strip mall, so we knew we wouldn’t have to contend with tourists to get a seat. We did have to deal with the hungry locals who were lined up, out the door, waiting to get a shot at the buffet table. The restaurant was packed, but since the turnover for buffet customers is so quick, I don’t think anyone went without a seat for more than 5 minutes.

Sabri offers a lunch and dinner buffet, both very reasonably priced at $8.95 and $10.95 respectively. They also offer a full dinner and take-out menu, but with such a well stocked buffet table, I don’t think anyone in the restaurant even took a look at a menu. We were hungry, so we hit the buffet right away. Sabri offers most of your standard Indian buffet fare. I thoroughly enjoyed everything I tried, epecially the Butter Chicken, Saag, Pakoras, and Shrimp Curry. The Tandori chicken was a little different than any I’d tried in the past. Instead of the reddish color I’ve grown used to, Sabri’s was greenish, and a little saucier than I’ve seen. Don’t be put off by the appearance though, as this was some of the tastiest Tandoori Chicken I’ve ever had. The Naan bread was almost flavorless, which was a little disappointing, but it worked fine to mop up any leftover sauces. I also thoroughly enjoyed their vegetable Kabobs. A little misleading in name, these deep fried, doughy, veggie balls, with a crispy outside and spongy interior, were fantastic with the mango chutny.

I’ve been to fancier Indian restaurants (even buffets), who place more emphasis on presentation and atmosphere, but I enjoyed Sabri’s no-frills approach to good, fast, Indian food at a great price. To think, up until a little while ago, Sabri still offered a $5.95 lunch buffet! If you ask me, two people eating their fill of tasty Indian food for under $25 is a great bargain. I know I’ll be back for Sabri’s buffet again. I also have to check out their latest food venture, a fast food sandwich shop called Naanwich, located just three doors down. Personally, Butter Chicken, rice and vegetables, wrapped in fresh Naan, sounds like the perfect alternative to most other fast food alternatives.
