"so good"

March 2008 - Since I moved to this neighbourhood I’ve found it hard to walk by and not notice the Caribbean Village. Its very brightly coloured exterior and the often enticing aromatic spices wafting out are pretty hard to miss. In the end, it was their roti special that got me, $7 for a roti. I thought was a pretty good price and I'd give it a try. After I had made my order, the chef, a very friendly and funny fellow by the name of James, came out and joked around with me for a bit. Anonymity is not part of what they offer at the village, its one of the friendliest and social cafes I’ve found in town. It was not a long wait before he came out with THE BEST fluffiest freshest roti I’ve ever had in Canada, with the most deliciously spiced curry chicken filling. It was all so tender and flavourful, and it was also notably huge. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Quadra St village looking for a good, hearty, stick to your ribs, Caribbean meal, or even a quick snack to go. They also have a selection of other traditional Caribbean food at a similar price, as well as patties, samosas.

"Quick and Delicious taste of the Caribbean"

August 2007 - I had noticed the colorful Carribean Village in Quadra village, even before we'd moved to Victoria, and I've had the chance to try it on a couple occasions since we moved here. The first time my wife and I stopped by, it was for a quick weekday lunch. We were both about to order the Curry Chicken, but the friendly man behind the counter suggested we get one order of the Curry Chicken and one order of the Spicy Chicken, and share them. We took his suggestion, and I'm glad we did. Both meals came on heaping plates of rice for about $7. The Curry Chicken was a pretty standard dish, big chunks of chicken and potatoes in a yellow curry sauce, over rice, Tasty, but nothing when compared with the Spicy Chicken. The Spicy Chicken was Sweet with ample spice and absolutely delicious. I completely forgot the Curry Chicken, and greedily ate up the majority of the other dish, leaving little for my wife. For a quick lunch, I'd say this dish is worth the trip alone.

On our second visit, we chose to just get some jamaican meat patties to take home. They have quite a variety of patties to choose from, and we ended up taking home the standard beef pattie, a curry chicken pattie and a chicken and potato pattie. The beef pattie was a little dry for my tastes, but the other two were fantatsic, making for a quick, easy and affordable (at about $2.50 each) snack, to go.

I'm glad this place is so close to our house, and I probably would have been back a couple more times, if they had longer hours. I've driven by, hungry, a couple times on weekend evenings, and they've been closed. I guess I'll have to stop by for lunch again. They offer take out, or eat in...and they've recently expanded their seating area, so there is plenty of room.
