| "Tasty Vegetarian meals" |
|
|
by Robin (from Victoria) April 2008 - This place is vibrant and colourful! This is a vegetarian restaurant with lots of options for great meals. The table cloths are bold colors and there is a lot to look at. It's a popular place too! They have got a great menu for juices and smoothies which are made fresh to order. Tasty! A friend and I came for a late supper one evening. There were a few tables to choose from. My friend got a juice blend and one of their yummy desserts. The juice blend, Dale Evens, had so much flavour in every sip! She decided on a power sphere: one of those energy balls packed with all sorts of good stuff. It was tasty. The desserts are on display in the counter around the bar. It was fun to check out the desserts while we were waiting for the meals. I ordered an enchilada dish. It came served with rice and salad. It was quite good. The enchilada dish was filling.

| "Strange hours, good food" |

by Tara (from Victoria, BC) December 2007 - My friend was in town and she’s a vegetarian so she asked me where a good vegetarian restaurant is. I’d heard a lot about Rebar in downtown Victoria and had wanted to give it a try for a while. It was a bit strange when we got there, half of the restaurant had the chairs upside down on the tables like they were getting ready to close. It was only 3:20 in the afternoon so we thought that can’t be the case and were seated and not told anything about why the chairs were like that. We ordered our food and then the waitress came back to tell us that they didn’t have any coleslaw left (my friend ordered a dish with coleslaw) and asked us if any of us wanted any fruit drinks because if we didn’t they were shutting down the machine. We thought all of this was strange and weren’t sure what to make of it. Then after our food came they started bringing stuff from the kitchen out and putting it on the tables around us. Anyway… turns out they close at 3:30 on Sundays. What a strange time to close! And they didn’t even tell us when we were seated. If we had known that we would have went somewhere else. Anyway, the food was really good. I had an almond burger which was really delicious, but came with way too much dijon mustard. Some bites I could barely swallow they were so tangy. Other than that it was very, very tasty, but too pricy for me. It was $9 just for the burger. If you wanted any sort of side, it was $12. So other than the strangeness of being in a restaurant as they’re closing, it was a good experience and our waitress was really nice. Next time I have a vegetarian friend in town we’ll probably go back to Rebar, we'll just have to check the hours before we go!

| "They could have just asked us to leave!" |

by Tiemen (from Victoria, BC) December 2007 - This past weekend, we had a friend visiting from out of town. We spent the day shopping downtown, and decided to go for a late lunch while we were out. We decided to try out Rebar, located in the center of the action in downtown Victoria, Bastion square. It was around 3 in the afternoon on a Sunday and, unbeknownst to us, Rebar was preparing to close at 3:30. They seated us, served us, and didn’t mention anything about closing until we asked them about it as we left…at 4:15!! Let me say this, the service was great, and the menu selection and food weren’t far behind.
You can’t beat Rebar for location. Sure, it doesn’t have water views like some of the other restaurants on or just off Bastion Square, but Rebar is in a really pretty part of Downtown Victoria. The restaurant itself is cozy and cool, and they’ve been in business since 1989, offering locals on tourists some of the freshest, healthiest food Victoria has to offer. My wife and I both chose the Almond burger, while our friend ordered the enchiladas. Everything arrived in VERY short order, and it looked and smelled delicious. The Almond burger was fantastic. Their “secret recipe” almond/vegetable patty was delicious, but a bit crumbly. I suggest ordering a slice of Jack cheese to help hold the patty together, as my cheeseburger held up a lot better than my wife’s burger, sans cheese. The patty came on a fresh Kaiser bun with pickle, sprouts, tomato, red onion, mayo and Dijon. It tasted to me like the spouts were mixed with horseradish, which I thought added an extra “zip” to the sandwich. My wife, on the other hand, thought it was little too strong. I’m not a huge fan of a lot of veggie burgers, but the Almond burger was, by far, the best I’ve tasted. I like a good hamburger, but I’d definitely forgo a traditional beef patty for Rebar’s Almond Burger…at least once in a while. Our friend thought the Enchiladas tasted great too, so there were no complaints out of us. We settled up our bill, which came out to a very reasonable $12 a person, including a couple hot beverages we ordered to go. On our way out, we commented on how dead the restaurant was, and that’s when we were informed that the restaurant had actually close over half an hour ago. We felt really bad for keeping them, and I still can’t believe that they let us sit there, and even made us hot drinks, well after they were supposed to lock up. Great service, tasty food and an interesting, healthy menu. In addition the breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch menus, they also offer a full menu of fresh juices from their juice bar, a coffee bar and wine and beer.
Rebar is a great place to get a quick, healthy and inexpensive bite to eat, in the middle of downtown Victoria. Just remember, they close early on Sundays!
