"Busy Pub"

March 2008 - Maude Hunter's is a pub located near the University of Victoria. It is on the second floor of the building which, I found out later, makes finding the washroom on the first floor a little difficult without directions. The tables are very close together but the atmosphere was cheery. This is a sports bar with many televisions hanging from the ceiling all set to various sporting events. We went to take a table in the corner but was told by the waitress that we were only allowed to sit at a table for two since there were only two of us. The table corner was meant to seat three people. She redirected us to another table and brought us the menu. We decided to have nachos and crab rolls. The tables are so close together that the fellow at the table next to us answered my husband's question when he asked me what size of nachos did I think we should get! The fellow told us that the large would be much too much for two. I asked him what else he recommended. The nachos were indeed very large and done just the way I like them - the chips were crispy and the beef was spicy. The crab rolls were like egg rolls with a spicy crab mixture in the middle - very yummy! I did enjoy the food, but I didn't really like the atmosphere. It was too crowded and much better suited for a larger group gathering than an evening out for two. I would go back but maybe after the baseball game with some friends.

"Average Dining Experience"

November 2007 - My husband and I love pub food and we received a coupon in the mail for buy one entrée and get the second free at Maude’s. So one Friday night we gave it a try. It was very busy and we almost didn’t get a seat. The server was very attentive and did a great job of serving us while we were there. I ordered a Strongbow and the Shepherds Pie with coleslaw. The Strongbow was great but the Shepherd’s pie was a bit disappointing. It didn’t have enough flavour and the potatoes on top were a strange texture. I was hoping for a lot better. But the place was packed and by the time we left there was a line of people waiting to be seated, so it must be doing something right. The atmosphere was your average pub with music, a big screen tv and darts. I’m thankful we had the coupon and didn’t have to pay full price for my meal. But again, the service was great and the place was packed, so I may have just ordered the wrong item. The pub is upstairs and then they also have a liquor store on the main level. I should also mention that it’s difficult to find a parking spot near the pub. We ended up having to park a couple of blocks away. For me, it wasn’t great and I’ll try another pub before going back.

"Fast Service...average food."

November 2007 - It was Friday night and my wife and I felt like hitting a pub for some supper and a beer, so we decided to take advantage of a two for one coupon for Maude Hunter’s Pub that we had received in the mail. We drove around the block a couple times looking for parking, before deciding to park a couple blocks away and walk. Be warned, between the Pub itself and the liquor store below it, there is not enough parking. The pub itself was a lot smaller than it looked from the outside, and even thought it was still early, it was packed. Luckily, we grabbed two of the only free seats in the Pub, and in almost no time, we had a couple menus in our hands. We were hungry, and wasted no time in ordering. For such a busy place I was surprised on how fast the service was, but they‘ve been in business long enough (their website says 20 years!) to know to put on enough wait staff to handle weekend crowds. I was in the mood for Fish and Chips, so I ordered the full order of Cod ($10.95). My wife went for one of here favorite pub standards, the Shepherd’s Pie ($9.95). The food arrived quickly and we dug in. The Fish and Chips were good, pretty standard for a city full of Fish and Chip shacks, but tasty and hot, nonetheless. The batter was crisp and the fries and fish were fresh. What more can you ask for…I was full and satisfied. My wife didn’t do as well with the Shepherd’s Pie. She said it was bland, and had been hoping for more. I think she was glad that we had the 2 for 1 coupon, as here meal wasn’t worth full price anyway. What can I say? I wouldn’t go back for a meal anytime soon (there are way to many great local restaurants!), but I would consider stopping in for a couple drinks if I was in the neighborhood, and didn’t have to go out of my way.
