| "Alaska Highway" |
by Marie (from League City, TX) June 2005 - this is a trip that every American should make. Be sure and take your special sign to add to the Sign Forest in Watson Lake. We have put up 2 signs for us as individuals and one for our beautiful city of League City, TX. Take a hammer and some long nails as sometime it is hard to locate that once you are at the Sign Forest. You can spend several hours there just brousing the signs, but they are interesting. There is so much history along the way. Be sure and stop at all Museums and Vistor Centres along the way. Not only do they have lots of information about the Highway, but about their local area, too. We have made the trip 9 times since 1992 and would be continuing our trips, but our age is causing us to take shorter trips in our local area instead of taking the longer trips. When you make the trip, be sure and take a swim suit so you can enjoy Liard Hot Springs. Also, side trips are great, such as Skagway out from Whitehorse and Dawson City and the Top of the World Highway. Just out of Whitehorse is a reindeer farm where you can get up close to reindeer feeding and petting them. Our granddaughter was with us in 1994 and her 'things I saw during my summer break' story when school started back was about the reindeer farm and along with photos, she made an A+. When you get to Haines Jct., take the side trip to Haines, Alaska. Lots of things to see in all the side trips. We have made this trip and on to Fairbanks in a month, but if you have longer, it is nice. Once in Alaska, stop in Horth Pole at Santa Claus House. If you are on an extended trip, take a trip to Anchorage and then on to Seward and Homer. Also a trip to Valdez with a stop at the summit of the pass to see the glacier there. The Falls along the way are great and make wonderful pictures to share with friends and family. We went to Valdez to spend 3 days and stayed 2 weeks, meeting a lot of wonderful folks from the lower 48 that are still corresponding or visiting with us, that was in 2000. Take your fishing gear with you to do some Salmon fishing along the way.
I could go on for hours about the Alaska Highway trip and the surrounding areas, but it could be boring to some of you. Just go if you ever get the chance.
