August 2007 - We reserved originally for 3 nights (adding a 4th a bit later). At booking we were told if we wished to cancel, we need to give 3 days notice which was fine. When we got closer to the date, we realized we could only stay 2 nights. When I called to cancel 2 of the nights, I was then told of another policy for that specific weekend that they have a 3-night minimum stay policy. I was not told this at time of booking, and I told them this. They said I should have somehow known this policy existed, and insisted we keep 3 of the nights.
They do not mail or email terms and conditions, so I had no way of knowing this policy. I said that for this time, it was fair to allow the cancellation of the 2 days, understanding that I would be aware of this in the future. They still insisted that we pay the over-priced rate for the 3 nights, whether we would be there or not. Otherwise, we should cancel.
I was very reasonable in my emails, but in the end they just cancelled our reservation on us.
We have stayed at the Carolyn Beach in past years (but not on this specific weekend for many years). It is the only motel in Thessalon, and so we never shopped around. Now we know better. The owners are not the friendliest to deal with, but we always tolerated them as we were there to visit family. We found other accomodations close by, well recommended, at two-thirds the price, with a decent cancellation policy and air-conditioned rooms.
Do not take anything for granted. Make sure you know all their unique policies before booking. They won't necessarily tell you them on the phone, but they will make you stick to them anyway.
The rooms are not air-conditioned, and the bathrooms (when we last stayed) were quite old -- the water pressure was non-existent. The restaurant is all right. The view is what people are willing to pay for, as it looks over Lake Huron. However, you can get that same view in many places in town. When you stay there, as long as you don't need to deal with them for anything except check-in and check-out, you will be OK.
But my best advice is -- do not stay there. There are other options.
