by George (from Coquitlam, BC) September 2007 - I have to start with the pool; situated on the 17th floor, it overlooks downtown (Bay Street, city hall, the entire local neighbourhood) and has a clear view far to the north. Even if you don't swim, go for a walk around and take some photos from the pool deck.
We stayed on the 20th floor in a room which, although not yet renovated--they are in the process of doing the entire hotel--was clean, neat and in good condition. The bath and toilet are in a separate room which is extremely small and difficult to navigate but then there are two sinks in the room itself with a huge vanity making morning rituals for two or more people much easier. The beds were comfortable and had white duvets and four pillows of assorted levels of hardness; a nice touch for picky sleepers! Others in our party stayed on lower floors in beautifully-renovated rooms with flat-screen TVs and great new furniture (my 80 year old uncle, however, complained that they couldn't figure out how to operate all of the gadgets). The front-desk staff and concierges were friendly, efficient and helpful. The concierges would even get cabs to come around to the main doors (the doors to the street involved about 7 steps down) for the older people in our group to get in easily. My only complaint about the physical setting was that the three main floors seemed to be poorly marked (M on the elevator was for Mezzanine, not Main) and inlvolved lots of stairs or slow elevators. Something to consider if your have people with mobility problems in your party.
The hotel is situated right in the centre of the entertainment district--theatres, restaurants, etc. all around you. The Toronto International Film Festival was on when we were there and Roy Thompson Hall is about a block away so many chances to see the stars and watch the excitement. The garment district is also very close so it's a great place for a girls' weekend away in TO! Also a short walk away are the infamous Bay and Yonge Streets for people-watching the rich and powerful or shopping til you drop!
