"Something a little different"
6.50
by Jessica (from Toronto)
June 2007 - Green Eggplant is a relatively new Beaches restaurant that seems to suggest vegetarian or Southeast Asian cuisine by its title and d้cor. Inside features simple and sleek dark wooden tables, chairs and floor – perhaps a trendy Vietnamese restaurant. The place also has a slight diner informality to it - and this is the most accurate hint of what the menu actually offers. A diner with some innovative additions, Green Eggplant begins service with three complimentary eggplant-based dipping samplers and wholegrain bread. The menu features an introduction about the eggplant, detailing the different kinds of eggplant that exist in the world (eight main kinds) and its vegetable lineage. The menu itself offers a variety of reasonably priced salads, wraps, and sandwiches. The contribution this restaurant makes to originality is its representation of vegetables – slightly more are offered and the quantity size is good. While definitely not a vegetarian restaurant, my eating companion had a Mediterranean wrap she loved – with a babaganoush, hummus, and grilled vegetable filling, while my universal salad – the chicken ceasar – had a flair of the original as the salad arrived with the chicken on a skewer (albeit the salad was soggy). All in all, this is a reasonably priced restaurant with a modest effort made at something different in a community that thrives on similarity.
