June 2007 - The Beacher Café is a Beaches tradition – it’s been around for over twenty years. This is the place I came to with my babysitter for hot chocolate as a kid – so nostalgia adds a certain rose-colored charm to the place. There’s something to be said for longevity.
Located in the heart of the Beaches strip, its street side patio is probably its biggest attraction – spanning a quarter of a city block. While advertising itself as having some kind of “jazz” affiliation, I fail to see it – other than in the occasional content of one its local artists’ works featured on its generous wall-space. “The Beacher,” as it’s sometimes called, is both slightly upscale and informal – a place where you don’t have to worry about how you’re dressed and you can also get a nice dinner out. With lovely weekend brunches, it’s at its busiest Sunday mornings. My evening dining experience began with the saganaki or fried cheese appetizer – true to its greasy and tasty Greek beginnings. My entrée was a seafood fettucine in a white wine sauce – not up to a coastal restaurant experience but pleasant nonetheless. I was too full for dessert but the dessert menu promised a hearty offering of New York style cheesecake and key lime pie amongst others.
