"Funky Kensington Cafe"
7.67
by Jessica (from Toronto)
July 2007 - The Moonbeam Cafe has been in Toronto's Kensington Market for a while. It's been around long enough to see the transformation of Kensington from a grungy second hand clothing district for hippies and punks, to a now trendier version - home to independent designers and cheap wholesale fashion outlets - with the same hippy/punk stores remaining nonetheless. The Cafe is situated on a side street between Kensington and Spadina and therefore gets a cross-section of thoroughfare from both Kensington and Chinatown - the staff that works there is also such a cross-section. A cute little Cafe, Moonbeam has a homey feel with lots of amateur-carpentry style chairs and tables tightly arranged in its nooks and crannies of available seating. The Cafe offers what one may expect from a funky downtown eatery - lots of vegetarian options, smoothies, and caffeinated beverages. The Cafe specializes in loose-leaf tea - of which there is a decent selection and the teas are usually kept nice and fresh. I had a veggie wrap and an iced chai. The veggie wrap was very small - more like a snack than lunch - however, the price did suggest this - as do all the food choices at the Cafe. The iced chai was somewhat tasteless - this is probably due to the fact that it was actually chai tea and soy milk - rather than the concentrated chai syrup most cafes use. My sister and I sat outside in the Cafe's selection of four tables - my sister hadn't been there a minute before being asked for change from a woman on the street - this is typical of the area as homelessness is a Toronto truth more visible here.
