"Divine dining"

October 2007 - On a recent trip to Toronto my husband and I were looking for an interesting place to eat dinner. We walked a few streets but nothing took our fancy and then someone recommended that we try Baldwin Street. It's the cutest little street, strewn with small restaurants and twinkling fairy lights. We quickly picked out Cafe la Gaffe and were very pleased with our meals. Our server was helpful and made great wine suggestions. Our meals were delicious and arrived quite quickly. The only downside was that they were out of some appetizers that sounded amazing! We did arrive later, around 9 pm, so it would be worth it to arrive a bit earlier to make sure that all the items on the menu are available. It felt like we had stepped out of Canada into some tiny European cafe!

"Fun Euro-Treasure"

July 2007 - Toronto has a very cute little secret (well, maybe not such a secret for anyone living here). It's called Baldwin Street. Located near the major intersections of Spadina and College - near such attractions as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Chinatown, and the student/art/ and fashion district, lies the tightly packed Eastern side of Baldwin Street. Exclusive home to a stream of restaurants, this tiny little gem of an area is also known as "little Thailand," despite there only being a handful of Thai restaurants in what is otherwise a shmorgasbord of cuisine options. Within the variety of retaurants offered here, lies Cafe La Gaffe. The long and thin Cafe is typical of any European/ Cosmopolitan eatery, and houses the conventional mahogany bar so present in many of its European predecessors as well. Two huge oil on canvas paintings dominate the walls with hyper-real depictions of, in the one, an old rugged fisherman, and, in the other, an emaciated Bohemian writer. I find them somewhat amusing in what is otherwise a very lighthearted and festive atmosphere. The restaurant draws in a cross-section of young couples and families inclined towards the arts and culture, and the menu at Cafe La Gaffe is incredible. A strange mix of haute-cuisine gourmet and "something for everyone," Cafe La Gaffe specializes in seafood and pasta. My father enjoyed a seafood bouillabaisse with a side of couscous to soke it up with. My chicken fettuccine with basil creme sauce was delectable. While for some reason my father's dish was somehow not quite enough (he love seafood and has a haerty appetite), I took home half of my pasta dish. Regardless, it is definitely worth a second trip because both dishes were memorably good.
