"Homemade Italian with Intimate Feel "
8.17
by Jessica (from Toronto)
June 2007 - Antoinette's is a small Italian restaurant with seating for only about twenty in the entire restaurant. Most nights, you can see Antoinette cooking in the back of the restaurant, her wild grey hair pouring over her shoulders and down her back (though I've never found her hair in the food). It's funny she gets away with this, but her food's so good, I suppose her clientele will forgive any personal eccentricities she may bring with her. Specializing, as any Italian restaurant does, in pasta - Antoinette's does well with the sides or alternatives as well. Serving the best goat's cheese market salad I've ever had, she offers the salad in an entree size as well - for those who don't want to venter into the carb world. The salad is a simple combination of market greens with deliciously sauteed mushrooms and warm goat's cheese with roasted red peppers. I think it has something to do with how the mushrooms are marinated because it is addictive. The pasta entrees are fun choices of every kind of pasta one can imagine: angel-hair, bowtie, penne, etc. with a recommended sauce for each one - though Antoinette will accommodate any alternate combinations of sauces, proteins, and pasta types your heart desires. I love the penne with rose sauce and grilled vegetables. An extra pleasure of dining at a small, intimate restaurant like Antoinette's is that she's both the sole proprieter and cook: the restaurant's only open evenings and is occasionally closed contingent on Antoinette being there and doing the cooking! Antoinette also offers personally created daily specials which are in keeping with seasonal produce and taste combinations. I once walked by the restaurant and had to stop at the thought of homemade thin-crusted pizza with artichoke hearts, three cheeses I'd never heard of before, and shrimp! Antoinette's has the usual offering of wines and desserts any good bistro has - but it's the personal touch of this restaurant that makes it so welcoming.
