| "Wholistic Health and Environmental Well-being with your Middle-Eastern salad" |
by Jessica (from Toronto) August 2007 - Carrot Common is a cooperative of wholistic health services located in an open-concept "mall" on Toronto's Danforth strip. Home to a well-being and spirituality bookstore, as well as hemp clothing and massages, there's a little eatery amongst the Carrot Common vegetarian grocery market to sit down and relax (if you can find a seat). As is common (ha!) with most vegan-vegetarian restaurants, Carrot Common allows you to choose your meal from a deli style staffed buffet area. The food can be either for take-out or sit down and the selection is fresh, often organic, and sustained by a network of free-trade local farmer's businesses seeking to create ethical and environmentally-friendly methods of providing produce.
At Carrot Common, you can really get any vegetarian food you want - they have a little something of everything covering something from each Continent. I went fairly simply, with a selection of bean salads, tabouli, couscous salad, and samosas and chutney. My friend had the soup of the day (sweet and sour Chinese), some cabbage rolls, babaganoush and hummous spreads with pita, as well as a yummy apple crumble (she was hungry). That's my only problem with vegetarian restaurants - I often find they prove to be more expensive than the non-vegetarian equivalent because you need to buy more food to fill you. I guess that's the price you pay for eating fresh produce. If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of a market - and the atmosphere of foodies with strong moral and ethical stands on the kinds of foods they buy - then you will love this place. If you want a quiet restaurant where you can have the intimacy of a private table - this place is not for you.
