"Tiny portions with lots of cheese"

August 2007 - Located in Toronto's Kensington Market, known for its vintage clothing, international restaurants and roaming lost souls, lies El Trompo. An authentically Mexican restaurant (as close as you'll find to Mexican in Toronto), El Trompo's menu serves traditionally Mexican dishes with their original Mexican name on the menu - though they also graciously provide English descriptions. My friend and I went here for breakfast which, in retrospect, wasn't the greatest idea. I had visions of fried eggs and beans with some kind of potato dish for breakfast. However, El Trompo's breakfasts, which they call "brunch," strangely lack anything like a complete brunch to order. There were eggs, except with no substantial side companions. The rest of the menu was filled with other incomplete meals, prompting the customer to scramble for an inexpensive side dish - although it seemed like, from the descriptions on the menu, if all you wanted was meat you would be more accommodated. My friend and I ordered the zucchini quesadillas (a corn tortilla with melted cheese) and side orders of refried beans. The quesadilla itself was quite small with a hefty amount of melted cheese inside and only entrails of zucchini spattered on top. The refried beans also came with melted cheese. The meal was overpriced ($10 each not including tip) and disappointing. Big Fat Burrito three doors down looked mouthwatering by comparison. El Trompo's bathrooms, however, are the cleanest I've seen anywhere in Kensington. They even have an automatic paper toilet seat machine - though this wasn't working while I was there. I've heard their authentic Mexican coffee with cinnamon is amazing though I didn't feel like it while I was there.
