| "An incredible dim sum experience" |
|
|
by George (from Coquitlam, BC) September 2007 - My friends in Toronto go to this place every weekend so I inititally had the advantage of locals who knew what to order but I went back the next weekend with other tourists and we did fine. This second-floor cavernous restaurant overlooking Spadina's infamous Chinatown is not going to win any awards for its decor but the food was incredible! There did not seem to be an elevator and the entrance is around the side on St. Andrew Street so be warned if anyone in your party has mobility issues or you are not willing to take the time to hunt it out. I must say, however, the dim sum was beyond belief and it is well worth the hunt to find this treasure!
You can choose from the standard carts patrolling the floor peddling the wares, ask your waitress for items from the dim sum menu situated on the tables (with pictures, English titles and descriptions), or go up yourself to the cooks busily working right near the doorway as you enter. I highly recommend the pork/leek wontons stuffed with filling and pan-fried, the seafood dishes were all incredibly fresh and tasty (ask for hot sauce and mustard for dipping these tasty little morsels), and the sauteed snow pea leaves were incredible. However, the rest of the dishes were all hot and steaming and tasty too. The tea pot and water glasses were refilled constantly and the wait staff asked how we were doing and if we needed anything else.
For those of you who have never had dim sum before, you get a bill when you arrive and the staff check off boxes for each item you order then you take the bill to the till when you are ready and the totalling is done at the door.
I would highly recommend this for a Saturday/Sunday brunch experience, especially if you wander the sidewalk markets, check out the local shops and watch the hustle and bustle of Chinatown while you are there.
