| "With so many great restaurants around, make sure you eat out!" |

by George (from Coquitlam, BC) September 2007 - The first night we arrived at the Holiday Inn on King in Toronto we decided just to have dinner in the hotel restaurant. BIG mistake! The staff were condescending, especially when we used a free appetizer coupon we received upon check-in, so I wonder why they bother issuing them if that's the attitude the staff have about them. Our waiter was practically non-existent, although the busboy was friendly and kept our water glasses filled. I ordered a New York Striploin which was tasty and well-cooked but had a huge chunk of fat and gristle which should have been removed before leaving the kitchen. The peppercorn sauce was great, however, and the grilled vegetables were perfect. My guest's prusciutto-wrapped chicken brest was quite dry and over-cooked, with no sauce to make up for this, however, and I personally would have sent it back. My main complain about the supposed fine dining experience, however, was that the restaurant is used as a walkway for the side door of the hotel so there were dozens of loud people jostling through this supposedly upscale restaurant. The hotel/restaurant owners needs to make a design change to avoid this unacceptable interruption in the middle of your meal.
When we went for breakfast the next day with a large group, the experience was not really much better! When we arrived it was obvious we were having a long drawn-out meal with family and friends but the waiter came by and rudely interrupted numerous times to take our order, inform us over and over that the breakfast buffet was going to close even though we had all said we weren't interested, and then hovered when we were done until we asked and then and only then were we informed he was going on his meal break and we needed to settle up the bill. Why didn't he just come out and say this instead of being so annoying?
I must admit, however, the breakfast was incredible; the omelettes were all tender and full of great ingredients, the low-carb plates were definitely not low-cal as there was about half a pound of bacon on these plates, the coffee/water glasses kept getting refilled constantly and the little fruit salads on the side of each plate was a nice touch.
If you are staying at the Holiday Inn on King, however, go across the street--being situated in the middle of the theatre district means there are dozens of great places to eat and drink within a block's distance and I am sure the service is far superior!!!
