"Nice place, for service go elsewhere"

by Kim (from Ottawa)
May 2008 - There is no better way to spend a sunny Sunday then to drive out to the country and enjoy a nice brunch? That’s what our family was thinking as we headed out to Almonte last weekend. We decided to eat by the falls at the Ironworks Pub. After waiting a noticeable lag of time to be greeted and seated, we waited a further ten minutes or so before we got our menus. I ordered eggs benetict while the rest of my family all chose standard breakfasts. When my husband asked for brown toast the waitress’ response was “sorry it’s baguette or nothing”. When pressed, she said that there was no other bread, but that he might be able to have a hamburger bun. He chose the baguette. We got our beverages and waited 45 minutes without any further attention from the serving staff. When we inquired what was taking so long we were given a hasty apology and told that the delay was because the restaurant was so busy. While the terrace was full, the main dining room was less then half full and the bar area was closed. This was not a “very busy” restaurant. We suggested that the management should hire more staff and asked the waitress to make sure that our breakfast was not simply forgotten on a counter and getting cold. She answered: “oh no, it’s not getting cold”. Moments later two servers rushed to our table with our order. Evidently our food was waiting under a heating lamp. The “maple smoked bacon” was dry and burnt; my son’s poached egg yolk was the size of a quarter and the white was almost nonexistent; and my eggs Benedict were cold – tasty but cold. After waiting close to an hour for this meal we were far too hungry to send anything back. We were all surprised to see that my breakfast was served on dark 'brown' bread. When we pointed this out, our waitress told us that she was not allowed to give that bread out with just any order (especially not the standard fare). All in all, it is too bad that such a scenic location is home to such dismal service and mediocre food.
