by David (from Orleans) February 2008 - For our dinner on our anniversary, we experimented. For the first time, we visited the Chahaya Malaysia restaurant on Montreal Road. For the first time, we experienced Malaysian cuisine. The meal was expensive but only because we ate so much food.
The host pointed out our table and then brought a plate of shrimp crackers which lasted the entire meal. The chicken Satay Kajang (three kebabs each) and two Popiya spring rolls made perfect appetizers.
After advice from the restauranteur, we selected dinner based around Sambal Udang the chili jumbo shrimp, a very spicy dish. Beware, this dish was over-the-top hot. The flavour begins with a unique smokey, shrimp-paste taste which then becomes burning chilis on the back of the tongue. Attempt this dish only if you pride yourself on being tough with spices. Have your water ready.
To offset the chili shrimp, we had Ayam Masak Lemak chicken in coconut sauce - saucy, as described by the restauranteur. We also had Gado Gado a cold dish which was bean sprouts, tofu, beans, onions and cabbages smothered in a nice dressing with a touch of tamarind. Add to this Nasi Minyak the basmati rice with a weak sprinkling of almonds and raisins on top. Some of the chicken in coconut sauce and some of the chili shrimp sauce went home.
For dessert, we had rambutan and deep fried banana with our jasmine tea. Beware, accompanying the ice cream, the large slices of deep fried fruit are plantains, not bananas. While I enjoyed the slimy, sweet rambutan, I could have done without the plantain.
On a Wednesday night, the restaurant is not usually busy and we had the pick of our table. However, things soon got too busy and the restauranteur had to call in his wife to help with the rush.
