November 2007 - As advertised, Taste of Japan is full of authentic Japanese cuisine and atmosphere. Located in Bells Corners, there is plenty of dining competition in the area but this place stands alone. You know things went well for us when the tip left behind was $20.

We all started with some miso soup.

One of our dining partners ordered the steak teriyaki to explore the Western side of the menu. The steak was a delicious New York striploin with turnip, green beans and carrot and a bowl of rice on the side. The other partner and I enjoyed our favourite sushi. I began with a flaming (literally) dish of sliced scallop. The wine sauce in the dish is ignited before arrival at the table.

For my sushi choices, I enjoyed ika (cuttlefish), tako (octopus) and unagi (eel). My other dining partner also enjoyed unagi. The tastes of each choice were so unique and so deep - just exquisite. The ginger and wasabi were not necessary. However, I still enjoyed those little extras.

If you aren’t a sushi-type but want to fool your friends in to thinking that you are, order the unagi (just the unagi). The eel is well grilled and the texture is the same as grilled chicken. The taste is nothing like fish. I guarantee that you’ll enjoy it, enjoy it so much that you may wish to try real sushi some day.

I had my first green tea ice cream and it was not what I expected. Apparently, the tea flavour was as strong as it would be in Japan, unlike the green tea ice cream usually available in North America.
