by David (from Orleans) April 2008 - I love Cora's. Great food, great presentation and despite my friend's "horror" at some breakfast entrees costing about $15, I think you get great value for your money... most of the time. We went for a mid-week, mid-morning breakfast at the Orleans version of Cora's. It is right at the corner of Jeanne D'Arc and St Joseph Boulevard. (The parking lot is awkward and always crowded.) It's not a place for a quick in-and-out but the mounds of fresh fruit and excellent cappucino make it worthwhile. For some reason, on the most recent visit, my cappucino had about 3 tablespoons of liquid in the nice big cup -- the rest was foam. I asked the waitress if they had changed the serving size and her response was that the machine is automatic and it is what it is. No offer for a free top-up but she promised to look into it because sometimes the spout does get clogged. Hello??
My friend had a typical eggs and bacon breakfast with hash browns, toast and tea on the side, and was quite satisfied with her meal and the price. I, on the other hand, had a sudden craving for hot, fluffy French toast, the kind we had for Sunday brunches, made with a cinnamon bread, a little melting butter on top and with a slice of orange set on the side. Imagine my dismay to see the dried-up, wrinkled-up, cold two slices that were set before me. They looked like the cook may have wrung them out before setting them on the plate and leaving it in the fridge for an hour or two before decorating it with inedible kale. Kale and French toast??? I didn't send it back because my friend was visiting from out of town and she seemed to recoil when I said I should, so I ate it dutifully, sipping my two mouthfuls of cappucino veeerrry slowly to make it last and try to warm up the cold food. I didn't want to make her short visit an unpleasant one. The reason we keep returning to Cora's is that we feel spoiled and pampered with the lovely presentation of cutely-carved fresh fruit that accompanies many entrees, like the Buckwheat Blessing (3 sausages rolled in buckwheat pancakes, sprinkled with tangy cheddar and accompanied by a huge serving of fresh fruit). However, on this day, I was highly disappointed.
I have not been back since but I am sure I will go -- I'll just never order French toast again! Mom makes it much better. And I will beware the mostly-foam cappucino and I promised myself I will demand a top-up if it happens again.
The 50/50 dining experience cost us $25.
