May 2008 - The Gabriel's chain has been a fixture in the Ottawa area for decades with several branches that only do pizza. Gabriel's supplied the monthly pizza feasts to my kids all through elementary school, but I never liked their
particular brand -- the doughier and greasier the better, it seems.
So when a friend recently suggested trying Gabriel's for breakfast, I was a bit wary. My favourite egg-and-bacon greasy spoon is in downtown Ottawa and we didn't have time to make the drive, so we ventured in and
we were pleasantly surprised. The decor is basic family restaurant style, carpets and dark wood, lots of booths. They have a partitioned room that was being used, when we were there, by a business group for audio-video
presentations and concurrent chowing down. I soon found out why. Their breakfasts are delicious! The coffee was good and delivered promptly. There seemed to be many regulars; everyone seemed to know each other's names. The servings of eggs/bacon/toast were generous and the hash browns weren't too greasy, served with softened fried onions (which I love but to each his own hash brown). I ordered the breakfast wrap platter consisting
of eggs with your choice of ham/sausage/bacon wrapped with fresh tomatoes and cheese. The platter came with salad but that could be because we were there at 11 a.m., closer to lunch time. We still had a heaping helping of the home fries, nicely spiced and hot. The wrap itself was
toasted and was actually too hot to hold when it first arrived. My friend ate hers with knife and fork. A good, cheap breakfast restaurant is hard to find -- and I've been living near this one for too long without knowing how good it is. With the price of gas these days, it's a bonus that it's just around the corner (but I will still pass right on by for pizza elsewhere).
